Newlife 0.3.0 released

Hello everyone!

The 0.3.0 version of Newlife is finished and I've released it on Patreon. Early-access Patrons can find it in the creations section here. The changelog is below.

That also means that the 0.2.10 release has been made public. The links to the right of the blog have been updated. The 0.2.10 changelog is here.

As usual, saved files & templates from older versions probably won't work with newer ones. I did have one message telling me that someone found their saves were still working after updating to 0.2.10, but I make no promises that this will work for anyone else.

For new players - just use one of the links to the right to get either the jar or the exe version. You only need one or the other - not both. I recommend trying the jar first.

For either version you'll need to have Java installed. A lot of programs use Java so you might well already have it. If the jar shows up as an unrecognised file type, then you probably don't. In that case you can get it from http://www.java.com/
The exe should tell you if you don't have the right version on your computer, but you'll still need to install it to run the game.

0.3.0 is the final part of this pregnancy update, and means that the game's length has been extended to 52 weeks. You can now carry a pregnancy to term and give birth and there's a new scene where you inform the father.

While making this change, I've build up quite a long list of further improvements to pregnancy. Some of the smaller ones will be added in the next few releases, but there are enough larger ones that I think Newlife would benefit from an entire major update based around improving pregnancy. I might put that forward as an option for the 0.5 vote, but it might also make sense to wait until the relationship update gets voted in and is completed first.

Here's the changelog:

  • Fixes for text issues. Thanks to dutchheathen & cubano for reporting problems they found.
  • New childcare skill. This makes it easier to look after children. Maternal characters get a starting bonus and also enjoy spending time with their kids more.
  • Prenatal class that improves your childcare skill. Maternal characters enjoy taking these classes more, so they get a stress reduction from them. Other girls should consider them like an investment in reducing your future baby hassle!
  • Fixed a bug in the client meeting reported by cubano where npc actions were sometimes being processed when they shouldn't be.
  • Added some fun text suggested by Cubano for when the player is heavily pregnant in the endgame scene. Although I did tone it down slightly to make Ivy sound just a tad less selfish.
  • Re-balanced the arousal & enjoyment effects of the sexy talk action in town.
  • Added some restrictions on lines in the “tell him you're ready” action where you tell your partner to get you pregnant. This now requires the maternal trait, for you to be in a relationship and for you to have feelings for him. No more asking one-night-stands to give you a baby. At least not from this action. There are some other lines I plan to have a look at in the future.
  • You can now call your boyfriend to come join you in the couples dance tournament. He'll always come, but he might be annoyed if he doesn't like dancing much. You'll also get a penalty to your performance rating if he's a worse dancer than the other men there.
  • Updated the character sheet to show the pregnancy stage, as suggested by cubano.
  • You can't have sex standing up in the third trimester of pregnancy. You can still make out standing up, go on your knees to please your partner, or go to bed if you're in a place with a bedroom.
  • New traits for npcs that determine whether or not they want to have kids, and if they'll try to impregnate you by underhand methods. These underhand methods are only slightly implemented so far – more will come in later versions.
  • Men who don't want kids are less likely to ask you to be their girlfriend if you're pregnant or you have children.
  • Various text updates & arousal/enjoyment effects in existing scenes based on these new traits and/or pregnancy status.
  • Men who've broken up with you are less likely to ask you to get back together. This can still happen at high relationship/attractiveness values though.
  • Men who don't want kids find you less attractive when you're visibly pregnant. Men who particularly want children find you more attractive, especially if they know the baby is theirs. I did consider having a separate “pregnancy fetish” trait, but for now I'm keeping it simple.
  • New action in your home where you can talk about your relationship with a man. You'll then get a follow-up choice of what to talk about. For now there are two possible things to say – you can declare your love for him or tell him you're pregnant with his child. The option won't appear if neither of these topics is available.
  • New scene for telling men they made you pregnant. For now you can only tell the father. You need to discover the father by getting a paternity test when you visit your doctor on weekends before you can make the announcement. There are quite a lot of possible reactions, based on his traits and your relationship.
  • If you're in a relationship then either he needs to be very supportive or it will have to be quite strong to survive having a baby without telling him he's the dad. This won't be a problem if you were knowingly pregnant when you got together – he can hardly complain about not knowing if he's the father if conception took place before you were his girlfriend.
  • If you think a 40-week pregnancy is too long, why not spend the weekend visiting your neighbourhood doctor or perhaps a friendly local mad scientist? Modern medicine can help with all sorts of things that would be unimaginable just a few years ago.
  • Added a small table with a list of your children to the Home & Inventory tab of the character screen.
  • Increased the game's length to 52 weeks.

Have fun, enjoy the new version, and please report any bugs!

Newlife 0.2.10 released

Hello everyone!

The 0.2.10 release of Newlife is finished and I've released it on Patreon. Early-access Patrons can find it in the creations section here. The changelog is below.

That also means that the 0.2.9 release has been made public. The links to the right of the blog have been updated. The 0.2.9 changelog is here.

As usual, saved files & templates from older versions won't work with newer ones.

In that case you can get it from http://www.java.com/.

0.2.10 is the first part of the pregnancy update. Some of the changes in this version won't be obvious until the game's length gets extended, because the game isn't currently long enough for you to get into the third trimester of pregnancy. That will change soon.

Here's the changelog:

  • Fixes for text issues. Thanks to cubano, josey14 & death25 for reporting problems they found.
  • Fixed a bug where casualness/elegance wasn't being described properly in clothing details.
  • While making out you can now ask your partner to put on a condom even if you're already pregnant. This obviously doesn't have any contraceptive benefits at this point, but might be of interest to people who prefer protected sex. There's a penalty to the willpower check for pregnant women.
  • Added a short description of your tummy to the character description.
  • Added crop-tops, which show your stomach even when they're fully worn.
  • Extensive changes to how pregnancy works, some of which are listed below:
  • You now won't find out you're pregnant until some time has passed or you get a checkup at the doctor. Getting tested the same week you got knocked up won't work - you need to wait until at least the week after before going to the doctor.
  • When you're pregnant your stomach will grow over time. There are four different stages from a flat tummy to heavily pregnant, although you probably won't have time to see the later two until the game's length gets extended.
  • Lots of little changes throughout the text to take pregnancy into account.
  • New short scenes to mark milestones in pregnancy.
  • You can in theory give birth now, although in practice this version doesn't give you time to carry a child to term so you won't get to test this until next release.
  • Removed the dance skill requirement to get reduced stress from the sound system and slightly increased its cost to compensate. Stress & relaxation will get more balancing work at some point in the future so this might change again in later versions.
  • Fixed a bug reported by Josey14 where sleeping with your client in exchange for a sale doesn't give you the option to complete the sales call that same turn.
  • Restricted some activities for women in the last stages of pregnancy, although it won't be possible to get so pregnant that you can't do them until the game length is extended: dance class & tournaments, clubbing. You also can't get in fights when you're heavily pregnant.
  • Added a selection of suggestions from HF user cubano to the oral scene male conversation options.
  • Fixed a bug in the nightclub dance scene where actions like dancing sensually weren't setting you to be dancing close together.
  • Improved the code that handles impregnation.
  • Once you enter the second trimester you can get an ultrasound test at the doctor which will tell you the baby's gender.
  • You can get a test at the doctor which will confirm your unborn baby's father. For now the father will appear as unknown until you get this test, even if you've only had sex with one man.

Have fun, enjoy the new version, and please report any bugs!

Next release tomorrow

Hello everyone! I've got the next version to a state where I think it's ready to be released, but I'm going to wait until tomorrow because it's quite late and I'm a bit too tired to build it without risking making a mistake.
That'll have the first part of the pregnancy updates. You won't be able to see all the new stuff straight away because you still don't have time to get to the late stages of pregnancy, but that'll change before too long.

Goodnight all, and I'll post again tomorrow.

Newlife update for Patrons

Hello everyone, there was a bug in 0.2.9 which could sometimes lead to the club dancing scene having no possible actions. I've uploaded a fixed version to Patreon, so please use that instead.
This version also makes it less likely for men to approach you in the club if they've been rejected that evening, and there's some text fixes. Sorry for any problems you've had, and I hope you enjoy the updated version!

Newlife version 0.2.9 released

Hello everyone!

The 0.2.9 release of Newlife is finished and I've released it on Patreon. Early-access Patrons can find it in the creations section here. The changelog is below.

That also means that the 0.2.8 release has been made public. The links to the right of the blog have been updated. The 0.2.8 changelog is here.

As usual, saved files & templates from older versions won't work with newer ones.

In that case you can get it from http://www.java.com/.

While I'm sure there'll be the odd tweak or refinement, 0.2.9 finishes the dance content by adding nightclub dancing and dancing on dates. Here's the changelog:

  • Fixes for text issues. Thanks to badlulu, lawhorn, death25 & cubano for reporting problems they found.
  • Fixed a bug reported by curious where the “safe” text was being shown instead of the “pregnant” text when you ask your lover to come inside you in the cowgirl scene.
  • Fixed a bug in the cupcake scene where the check for modelling was the wrong way round and needed a charm below 10 instead of 10 or higher. Thanks to an anonymous blog commenter for reporting this one.
  • Men can no longer remove your underwear when your trousers are around your thighs – thanks to Josey14 for reporting this.
  • As suggested by Josey14, added some code to fix the player's clothing up a bit when you finish making out at home. Men will also put their wedding tackle away if they're still wearing trousers, although clothing that's been completely removed won't be put back on for either of you.
  • Fixed a bug where the clear head trait was being used incorrectly for flirty behaviour when determining how the pc responds to sexual advances.
  • The “risky inseminations” stat will now count the one that gets you pregnant too. Thanks to cubano for reporting this bug. It is still possible to get pregnant without incrementing the stat though - “safe” days don't count towards it, but they aren't 100% safe for most characters.
  • Added another breakfast option
  • Added “dark brown” as a default hair colour for east asian characters.
  • Renamed the breast size choices, as requested on the tfgamessite forum thread a while ago.
  • Added middle-eastern default race for players and NPCs using values suggested by Mugunghwa on Patreon.
  • Added a lot of new dialogue to the dance scene that was suggested by players – specifically cubano on HF and an anonymous person of mystery on the blog.
  • You can now buy a sound system and dance with dates at home. The sound system also improves the stress reduction you get from relaxing at home, but only if you have a high dance skill.
  • Changed the conditions for enabling the club dancing action. This is now based on dance skill & alcohol level, with a bonus for the outgoing trait and a penalty for shy girls. This only affects you deciding to dance – even if you don't meet the conditions men can still take you to the dancefloor.
  • New scene for dancing with someone in the club.
  • You now need to have a drink between dances in the nightclub. Any drink will do, even water.
  • You can now initiate nightclub dancing when you're with someone.
  • Implemented an awesome suggestion from phantombird for improving the important client sales scenes. You can now keep on selling once you've successfully completed a contract, and when time runs out or you choose to leave, you'll get an additional bonus to your job performance based on how persuasive you were. However, if something happens that angers the client then you risk losing the entire sale.
Edit: Following a bug report, I've put out an updated version 0.2.9b with the following additional changes:
  • Fixes for typos & text issues. Thanks to luvs toosplooge, curious & cubano for reporting problems they found.
  • Fixed a bug where men could end up with no valid actions in the nightclub scene, resulting in empty turns where nothing happens if the player chooses “Let him decide”.
  • Rejecting a man's approach in the nightclub now makes it less likely he'll try to pull you again that night – this was most recently suggested by curious, and I think it was requested a while ago by someone else too.
  • Modified the requirements for club dancing actions to ensure you always have at least one available. Thanks to DutchHeathen for reporting this one.

Have fun, enjoy the new version, and please report any bugs!
